December 31, 2005 | 7:13 pm

Well, how many times have you started sleeping in a year and woke up the next year ? Well, I have done it a whole 13 Times. And, you too would’ve done this quite a lot of time, unless you are in the habit of attending New Year Parties….

But then, this year’s been a good year for me. It’s done a lot of changes to me, a little physically and a lot mentally. Well, let me just go over some of the kmilestones……;)

In January, I got my new and upgraded Computer. We upgraded our old Celeron 433 MHz with a Great 64 MB of RAM , which I have had for around 6 Years then, to a P4 2.4 GHz with 256 MB RAM. And, the first thing I installed after WinXP was put there was VS.NET 2005 Beta 1, which my Cousin Sudar was kind enough to lend to me….

And then, I just couldn’t thank my Cousin Enough. He Introduced me to Firefox, without which I’dve been lost in a mire of pop-up ads. He introduced me to the blogsphere, without which you’dve been recieving a 404 if you came to this URL. Thank you kutti anna for all that;) And Besides, without him, I’dve thought that a Computer meant a Person who computes and C was the third letter of the alphabet;)

And then, one fine day, Sunil contacted me through YIM and introduced me to the CNUGStudent. It was because of him that I am a Tamil Champ Now, and got to meet all those cool People….

And then there was Sriram, who inspired me to reach Technical Excellence. And then there was Saurabh and Aswin, who helped me look at the lighter side of life.

And then, ofcourse, where my Teachers. I’dve been an Ignorant guy with an intention to be average without my last year’s Class Teacher and Tamil Teacher, Mr. Arul Rajan. And, without my English Teachers Mr. Dominic & Mrs. Gear, I’dve known as much English as a midget in a Pond. And, without my History Teacher Mr. Lacto, I’dve never known what it is to face life in the true sense, without the protection of a Managed Environment such as a School. Without Mrs. Selvi, I’dve shunned Science like anything. And, to all those teachers who made life at my School Easy and Exciting.

And ofcourse, thanks to Mr. John Peter, who made sure that our School Life would never be Short of Entertainment;)

And, without my Dad, I’dve never seen the light of Reasoning…

Thanks to all you people, for you have made me what I am….

Well, in retrospect, the thing Is, this Year has been the year for me, because of the help of other people. And, as Bill Gates said “We can see more not because we are great, but because we stand on the Shoulders of Gaints..”

Bye Now Guys, and Wish You all a New Year much more happier than the last one you had….

Meet you all next year!

It’s all over….

| 5:30 pm

Well, seems like I’ve exhausted those 400 MB. Got some pretty neat stuf, though not as much as I’dve hoped for, though. And, I can’t directly estimate my Usage, since that stupid idiotic moronic BSNL Portal I raved about dosn’t show my usage till yesterday!

Well, I am just doing some light reading at MSDN Magazine now, so hope to blog about the New Year soon….

Bye for now….

Burning away Bytes…..

| 12:40 pm

Well, due to the wonderful work done by BSNL, I have to burn 436 MB of bandwidth in less than 12 hours.. How sweet… But, for this, I had to put up with almost half a month of almost abstinence…

Well, I’ve burned away 150 MBs, but still got 250 MB more. Just going around, downloading anything I can. But for my Life I just couldn’t find the windows version download of Apache 2.2! They have Windows version for all the other releases, and there is not even a single mention on the site about this…… How strange….

Hope to blog back after burning them all away, and about the stuff I downloaded….

Any Suggestions people ?

Bye for now….

Rant on BSNL…..

December 30, 2005 | 8:46 pm

Well, when was the last time you cursed someone for quite a long time for Plain sucking HTML ? Well, if you had been on BSNL DataOne, you’dve done that quite some time often….

Note : If You’d rather not read a very very violent rant, move one…. Seriously…

Well, this is a modified version of the Warning I ran in my last rant, so it seems I am ranting a lot now;)

Well, if you use BSNL DataOne Broadband, you get a Fancy Portal to check your usage statistics. And, I have reasons to believe that the guy who designed that portal must’ve had a PhD in how to really annoy people out of their wits….

Well, first you have to type an IP adress[http://10.240.89.199/]. Well while there is a reason stated that it has to be accessible only from the BSNL Networks, but then, I suppose they should have had atleast a Domain Entry, so that Normal Users can check their Usage….

Next, it works Only in IE. Well, though there is no clear reason given, upon viewing the source, I saw that they had used an IE-only feature called Script Encoding that has recieved widespread cricticism. Well the basic thing it does is, it dosn’t allow your Script to be viewed at the client, though what is so Precious in that portal that they want to hide is beyond me….

And then, ofcourse is the adding Problem. They presented a Session by Session record of your Data Usage in KB, spanning several pages. And, ofcourse, you would have to add them all to get your usage. Very Inituitive, UserFriendly…..

But then, it looked like it started changing and they started teaching their machines to add and display the total usage. It started looking like things were starting to change. But then……

Well, this is the thing that really really really annoyed me. Well, If you’ve read any Sherlock Holmes stories, you’dve observed that I’ve been making most of my posts and comments in the mornings. Well that was because I checked in my Usage stats on around the 15th of this month. And, at the place where the Total Payable Usage figure usually seemed to be displayed, I found a mammoth figure of around 900 MBs… Well, it was quite a shock for me, since I’ve never done anything heavy this month.

But then, one really couldn’t use Reason with those Government Agencies, so I took some measures to reduce bandwidth Usage. First, I started avoiding FireFox and using Avant with the Block Everything except Text Option on. And, I almost started avoiding using the Internet using the normal hours, instead using it only during the happy hours between 2 AM and 8 AM. And, for this, I changed my habit and started sleeping early and getting up early….

And, I stopped checking the Stats site, since I knew I’d go berserk if I saw that, and also that Dad’d go Berserk and probably even cut the Connection, If I told him that I’ve exceeded the Limit. So, I just kept it in my mind, and didn’t think of going to the stats site….

And Imagine my Surprise and horror, when I checked it today Morning, and found it listing 2.12 GB! Well, I was really enraged to see that, even after my preventive measures, since if Dad gets a bill of 3,000 Rs, then, I am 100% sure I’dve been cut off from the wonderful world of the Internet and the Blogsphere….

But then, something else caught my Eye, and that was before the Date Column, there was a Column with the text the Total Payable Usage in all the rows. And, the 2.12 GB was also under the title Total Usage. Also, the log listed several sessions which were within the happy hours….

Well, how much I had used I couldn’t tell, so I just hoped I didn’t cross the 1 GB Mark. But then, as I was browsing by Sharath’s Archives, I discovered this Gem of a Post about a Great Utility for Broadband users. Well, I checked it out and came here, and with the download just some 68 KB, I downloaded it and ran it….

Now, Imagine how Angry I’dve been If I found that I’d actually used just 560 MB! And, Due to the Moronic Thoughtless Baseless Counter-Inutiative User-Unfriendly Work of an Idiot, I had to spend almost 3 Weeks with minimal browsing and had to change my habits and wake up at 4 in the Morning instead of 11! And, as I said, that fellow does deserve a PhD in the art of Annoying People…..

Well Guys, that said, I’ve actually benefitted something from that Moron, since I’ve learnt to wake Early. And, also, I’ve got a big collection of Books on my HDD, which I suppose to blog about later. But then, I’dve rather been left as I was……

Hope these guys actually do some usability Research and actually try to use their Software. And, it’s time that they start using Cross-Browser Code, and make some Intelligent Decisions based on what users want….

The Last point is there because they’ve got a bunch of useless features that anybody who has the heart to pore over VinuThomas.com and get the IP for the portal will never Use. These Include such things as Stop Current Service and a Change Password that dosn’t work. And some more things that have really strange and frightening names.

And as usuall with BSNL, all the BSNL Guys I’ve met donno a bit about the existance of the portal itself! And, even my uncle, who works at BSNL dosn’t know about it, and none of his friends know about it too! And, If it were not for my Cousin Sudar who digged up the URL from the Vinuthomas Website, I too wouldn’tve come to know of that…

Well, it’s been a Long Rant, and a Long Blog Post in that, but then, BSNL is the only one affordable over here. And, without it, I don’t suppose that I’dve been introduced to the wonderful world of the Internet and the Blogsphere.

Thank you BSNL, but it’s high time that you start sounding less like a Government Agency and more like a competitive Business…

And, BTW, other than BSNL and my Dad, I just can’t thank my Cousin Sudar enough, since without him, I’dve been just like on of my classmates, watching TV, going to movies, Playing Cricket and BasketBall and probably getting a 75%….. Thanks…..I mention him here because, without him, I wouldn’tve been Bashing BSNL here;)

And, thanks for the comments, and keep em coming;)

Bye for now….

Tamil Blog….

| 7:18 am

Well, If you’ve been following this Blog, you’d know that I sortof don’t like Tamil from posts like this and this. But, today Morning, as I was browsing by Aswin’s blog, I came across someone called Ammu. I just clicked the link and Viola! I was in a Tamil Blog!

Well, maybe this shocked me a bit. Or, maybe it pleased me a bit, seeing my Mother Language being represented in a Blog in the World Wide Web. And Certainly, quite happy to see that it consisted almost fully of Original Poems in Tamil.

And, If my Dad saw that Blog, I’d betcha that he’d want to start a Tamil Blog too;), since He’s just quite my opposite in the Tamil Area.;)

Fantastic and Keep Going, Ammu;)

Bye for now….

Entrance Exams and :O

December 29, 2005 | 8:30 pm

Well, this issue has been almost torturing me from the moment it started. Well, if it were to be some small trivival matter, I’dve just raved about it and left it to rest. But this issus, it is about my Future. And, not just mine, but also that of many of my fellow students. Well, without starting to sound like a boring lecturer, let me get to the point.

If you don’t want to hear a Rave, please move on…. Seriously
Note: I stole this warning from here, which was stolen from here. Hey Jeremy, I hope you don’t mind this bit of Copyright Violation;)
If you are in Tamil Nadu, you’d know that the Common Enterance Test, which is used for College Admission has been Abolished. And, they did it in a really haphazard and moronic way that can be achieved only by a Political Organization.

Well, the gist of the Story is that, you are no longer admitted to colleges according to your Enterance Exam. Well, the basis on which you are admitted to a college is vague now. But, our teachers speculate that it will be based on several really Moronic and Dubious methods for admission, including such classics as Caste, Relegion, Date of Birth[Seniority:O] and most Moronic of all, even something called a Shuffle!. Well, so now, the fate of a student is in the hands of Chance, rather than Choice and Merit! And, ofcourse, the inevitable +2 Marks, which are all based on stupid Memorising and the Xerox Mentality.

Well, they changed it back to the Enterance Exam last time, but I don’t know what’s happening next. And, with the advent of the act which forces all colleges to have Reservations, I suppose things could get only worse. And, I donno what to expect 2 years later…..

All these, Ofcourse, provided that I am correct and not, as usual, mistaken… And, If you have any views on this, and even if you don’t have any views on this, Please Comment…;)

Bye for now….

My Top Ten Predictions for 2006…

| 7:33 am

Hi. Looks like everybody’s got a 2006 Prediction List, So I’ve also got one. But, the difference here is that, all the Items in My List will be surely True. I am 100% sure that all my predictions will come True. For those who are not convinced, read on. For those who are convinced, please leave;)

  1. Google will NOT Buy Microsoft
  2. Microsoft wil NOT Buy IBM
  3. Webdings will NOT be the default font in Windows Vista
  4. Scooble will NOT go to Space outside Earth.
But, he’s a hardcore geek, and If he hears about Virgin Galatic, I bet he’d book a ticket for himself, even if it meant sell his house and everything and . But, Virgin Galatic’s First Foray into space is supposed to be in 2010, So, I don’t think this prediction is in jeapordy of being made false
  5. My Cousin Sudar’s Computer will malfunction atleast once.
Well due to it’s past Record, in which it broke down 3 times this year[if my memory serves right], I just suppose It’s most probable that it breaks down next year too. If any of these Predictions can be proved Wrong, it is this one…
  6. Imagine Cup 2006 Finals will NOT be held on the Sun.
Well, with a Corona Temperature of more than 2 Million C, I don’t think any Silicon based Computers can survive there….
  7. I will not Become President of India
This is due to several Reasons :

    1. President Abdul Kalam is one of my Heroes
    2. I don’t like it
    3. The Constitution clearly states that a person below an age of 35 cannot be a President, and I am not 35 next year…
  8. Indian Politics will never make Sense.
    Atleast to me;)
  9. 9183422132312311 - x = 1239123123455 - - x Will NEVER be True, for whatever values of x.
Well take a peice of Paper and Pen and work it out;)

So, these are my predictions for 2006 and I’d be surprised to see any of them proved False. And, fellow bloggers, we’ve still got 2 Days more, so just put down your predictions….;)

Mouth Watering…

December 24, 2005 | 5:40 pm

Well, But for the Occassios on seeing some hot Chenna or Biryani from my Aunt’s House, I’ve never ever ever had experienced the mouth watering Sensation, Until Now….

And, that was because of Windows Vista. Though I’ve Heard lots of Stuff about Vista, I’ve actually not seen any Screenshots of that one. But then, when I saw screenshots like this, this, this and this, I just couldn’t help it but to wish I was having them running right Now in my System. Well, Lucky Guy Sriram ;) I suppose he’s got a build of it in his System running now;)

I just can’t wait for Vista to come out and Boy this Does beat the Linux I’ve seen[which is just one though;)]….

Keep the Comments coming and thanks for them…

Update This Picture is my Desktop WallPaper Now, Since I just can’t stop looking at it….

PageRank Problems…

December 23, 2005 | 6:22 pm

Well, I’ve had this Question for long ever since I read about PageRank in an Issue of the CHIP magazine that my Dad bought for some 50 Rupees some three years back. Intrestingly, That Magazine was bought by Dad since it posed a CD with some Games [Demos] in it…

But, then, it had an article on PageRank and google and all those things. At that Time, I was just starting to learn VB and had done some non-serious absolutely crappy programing in C/C++. And, I’ve just had a vague Idea of the Internet and Search Engines from my Cousin Sudar….

But, that has changed Now. I use Google a Lot Now. It’s my Default Search Engine with both Avant and FireFox. And, I suppose that the average Web User has used Google within the Last 60 Seconds. And the PageRank algorithm seems to be really working….

But then, something else seems to strike at me. Let me explain them to you here…

An Important part of Google’s PageRank Algorithm is the No. of Links a Page gets: The More Links your page Gets, the higher is your PageRank. But the Problem is, the higher is your PageRank, the topper you go on Google. And, the topper you go on Google, more people will see it. And, as more people see it, you will naturally get many more Links. And, as you get more incoming Links, you get a Higher PageRank. And, as you get a Higher Page Rank, you move up the Google Search List. And, you get more people. And you get more links. And you get a Higher PageRank…… So, it goes on Recursively…

So, I suppose You got my Point : There maybe many other sites equally as good and with better Quality, but they get lost in the Search list due to this Recursiveness and the fact that most Average Users just don’t click the Next link of Google…

Well, Am I correct or am I missing a Point here ? Since It seems I am always wrong, I hope the more experienced brains correct my Mistake if I have one. And, If I don’t have one, just drop in your comments, since It’s really Nice to see 5 Comments at your Blog rather than 0 Comments…;)

Sentient Sentences…

| 4:37 pm

Well, I could hardly stop laughing while I was reading through This Story[hehehe;)], written by an MIT Student. Well, If you have some spare time [and even If you don’t], just go through it. Don’t loose your Patience before you get to the end, as it is quite funny, since all the statements that those Sentient Sentences make are true and logical, provided you make the assumption that each Sentence is Sentient of it’s own Right and seperate from every other sentence there…

Well, After Reading that story and several other Stories from MIT, It seems I’ve started writing like the Guy who wrote them:P

Well, and thanks to David Cowan for pointing me there…

Thanks and Keep the Comments coming…

Changed Blog Title….

December 19, 2005 | 8:36 pm

Well, seeing so many Catchy Titles such as Handled Exception, Waves, Musings on Life and Scooblizer, I just got a bit bored with my somewhat boring Title, The Blog of Yuvi Panda. So, I’ve just paraphrased George Washington and named it By Me, Of Me, For You…. Somewhat Catchy, huh ?;)

Just drop in how you feel and, My Dear Cousin Sudar, I think it’s time you change the Title of Your Blog Too…

Well, and thanks Sudar and Sunil for redesigning their Blog that gave me the inspiration and impetus for me too to redesign my Blog… Thanks a Lot…;)
