Should I go with WPF?

January 31, 2007 | 2:55 pm

That, was the question that I had been asking myself for the past couple of months. Sure, the screenshots rock. Sure, the features rock. But, I was percieving it as a bit “complex”. That would be put into perspective if you get a bit of my background: I first heard about .NET when Visual Studio 2005 was in Beta 2, and I first heard about VB6 when .NET 1.1 had been launched. So, I’ve had it easy, especially in the IDE side: Everything had been done for me from Day 1. Not many bugs. Even the betas of VS2005 were pretty much smooth.

But, WPF? VS support was dismal to say the least, and the UI designer (Blend) looked more like Illustrator than Visual Studio. And, the XAML code? Grids, Stacks, whatnot! It seemed like I was trying to write a device driver in Java!

But, that was, until I saw this damn cool screencast from Channel9. It’s a bit old, and the bits used are a bit old as well, but after I saw that screencast, I’m hooked on. Complex? Nope. Would you say HTML is complex?:D No Designer? Who cares! I’ll use any XML editor, and the one that comes with Visual Studio has Intellisense as well. I digg WPF. My next application(for which I’m drawing prototypes during Chemistry class, so that I’m not wasting time), is in WPF.

And, when is the Channel9 Video embed gadget coming? Or, is it coming at all?:D Let’s see if anyone from Channel9 heads here, to the blog of this Y-Lister….

P.S: HeyRobert Scoble, have you forgotten about us developers? I don’t think I’ve seen any Developer oriented videos at PodTech or ScobleShow.

Reading a PDF file, and Foxit Reader rocks!

| 3:35 pm

Reading a PDF file, without Foxit

  1. Double click PDF file.
  2. Stand up.
  3. Do 4 minute exercise routine.
  4. Sit down again.
  5. Start reading.

Reading a PDF file, with Foxit

  1. Double click PDF file.
  2. Start reading.

Thank you, the great programmers at Foxit, for you’ve made me overweight and even grew me a paunch with your software:D Other than that, you and your software (though maybe not your spelling), totally rock. Thanks!

And, to anyone else stuck in the land of Adobe’s Acrobat Reader: Get Foxit Reader. Highly Reccomended.

FotoChop: Scoble - Pissing off the Blogosphere so you don’t have to T-Shirt

Just like the previous one, the target of this FotoChop as well is Scoble. The last sentence of today’s first post was seen on his T-Shirt on May 05.

FotoChops: Robert Scoble’s Pauch

January 27, 2007 | 4:45 pm

Is that the correct spelling?

Robert Scoble with Kristopher KateRobert Scoble with Kristopher Kate Hosted on Zooomr

I love Zooomr. It sure has some issues to take care of (No quick Blog This link in photos, I need to click thrice to get the HTML, PhotoSets need to be implemented, API Key issual should be made automatic, No option to set licence for all photos at once, OpenID issues and a thousand other things), but it’s growing. I’m with it!

The original image was taken by Thomas Hawk, and as was his custom showed up both in Flickr and Zooomr. But, the one in flickr had a CC licence which I could use, while the one in Zooomr was All rights reserved. Guess which one I used?

Hey Scoble: I have nothing against you or your pauch. It was just that the first name that popped up into my name when I thought of this was you, so if it offends you(or anyone else), please do not look at that photo:D

Happiness, Inside Out

January 25, 2007 | 4:19 pm

First, some basic info. The ten days camp was to a village called Kosappur, some 30 odd kilometers from my house. I was actually quite surprised that there were places this rural so close to where I am staying. The place isn’t even locateable on Google, Yahoo! or Live maps. It’s a one and a half hour bike ride from my house, and there is a single bus to the place, which commutes 4 times a day. We stayed in a farm that houses some 400 animals of various sizes and shapes. I’ll post about what we did there later. This post is about what I learnt from this.

Happy Leprosy PatientHappy Leprosy Patient Hosted on Zooomr

One day, we paid a surprise(to us) visit to the nearby Pope John’s Garden, a home for people suffering from Leprosy. This guy is an inmate at Pope John’s Garden. He was the one who recieved us from the van and showed us around. He was practically with us the entire stay. Me pointing the cam at him bought out this smile.

He’s Happy.

How could he be? He’s got every friggin reason in the world to be sad. Disfiguring dreadful skin disease? Check. No Money? Check. No Luxuries(There’s not even a TV in the whole place)? Check. No path/goal for the future? Check. No support from family? Check.

But, he’s still friggin happy.

How? Happiness is within. He’s realized that he can stil be happy without any external dependencies. He could be happy, statically linked, without any external dependencies(which might lead to DLL Hell), standalone, just like in the good ol’ DOS days. That, is what he taught me. Happiness is within. If he can be happy with all his problems, then where on the scale does a powercut or slow internet connection lay?

And, just being with him made me happy. The knowledge that I bought out that smile made me happy. When I visited him, I made him happy. When I made him happy, I felt happy. That brings me to the next point, that Happiness is outside. The fact that I made someone else happy made me happy. By a small act of visiting him, I made him happy, which made me happy.

If there is anything that this camp thought me, then this be it: Happiness is inside, and outside. You are more happy when you make someone else happy.

I don’t even know the name of that guy, but he’s probably changed my view of life, broadened my horizons. Thanks dude!

More photos coming soon. You can check them out here, or subscribe to the RSS feed here.

Analysis of Wikipedia coming soon!

And, thanks to all the people who have encouraged me by posting about me, and another special thanks to all those who helped me buy the cam(especially Rob). Thanks!

And I am considering merging my Zooomr feed with my main feed. Any thoughts?

Back from the Camp!

January 21, 2007 | 3:36 pm

Just got back from the camp a few hours ago. It was life-changing, to say the least. A few weeks back, I used the word “broaden my horizons” in my “author” section of my website. At that time, I had no idea that I would be featured on Scobleizer, get a camera or meet Leprosy patients. Now, I truly feel that my horizons have broadened. Detailed report comin uo, after school…

Obligatory SuperMacro of a FlowerObligatory SuperMacro of a Flower Hosted on Zooomr

Most people seem to post a SuperMacro of a flower or some insect first, and I too am following suit. If you notice carefully, there is quite a bit of noise in the picture, because I accidentaly shot this one at ISO 200, even though the light was good enough for ISO 80(This one was taken in the morning, and I forgot to change the previous night’s settings). But still, I am pretty freaked out that I am able to produce images of this quality. I have around 1800 pictures waiting to be categorized, tagged and uploaded, and with school tomorrow, It’s goanna take some time for that to happen. So, please bear with me.

And, I have decided to use Zooomr for hosting my pictures over Flickr. Why?

  • The lone programmer there is just two years older than me! And, he was dablling in HTML when he was 5. Friggin cool.
  • They give away free Pro accounts to bloggers. It’s good for a year, but I hope to be able to earn enough to buy my own Zooomr Pro account by then.
  • The features rock! And, with just one person to convince, new features get in fast.

Oh, and all of them are licenced under a Creative Commons Attribution licence. Notice that it is Attribution only: You could do whatever the heck you want with it, but just gimme a link. Thank you!

Thank you!

January 12, 2007 | 1:13 am

Thanks to all the contributions I recieved (A total of $295), I am now the proud owner of a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. Notice it’s the S3, since it looks like the S2 doesn’t ship anymore. It costed around 20k rupees(18.5k for the Camera and 1.5k for a 2gb Card), which is around $449. I could not have done it without the help of Rob Lagasse, Deannie McNeil, Gareth Clark, Zoltan Edros and Krzysztof Kurowski. Thanks a lot people! You just changed my life a whole freakin lot!

I am leaving in a few hours time to the camp, and will probably not be posting for atleast ten days, but that *might* change, if any of my friends have a GPRS enabled cell phone. I’ll probably come back with my 2GB card full of photographs, Videos(it does 640×480. Yay!), and even audio(It even has a special standalone sound recorder!). Thank you people!

The ChipIn is closed, but if you still want to feel the good feeling that you get when you donate, then

  • Sponsor a poor child to lead a better life: Contribute at worldvision.org. You’ll put a bigger smile into a child’s face than mine. And, if you did so, leave a comment, so I too could know that I helped in someway, though I couldn’t financially(yet).
  • Go, leave a comment at this Guy’s blog: He’s an IT manager suffering from Cancer.
  • Donate to a Charity that’ll make the world better, at http://www.justgive.org/
  • Or, if you don’t want to do any of that(shame on you!), paypal me at yuvipanda@gmail.com. Spambots welcome.

Thank you people!

And, next StatBot: Analysis of Wikipedia’s external links, then internal links, then Engadget vs Gizmodo! Will be back!

Thanks for those who ChippedIn, and please ChipIn to help me buy the Canon PowerShot S2 IS

January 7, 2007 | 12:15 pm

I woke up today morning, only to find that my request for donations had garnered it’s initial target of $250! Thanks guys! And, thanks Rob, who donated the $250 off his Casino winnings(A great way to spend them, I guess)! Also, thanks for some fine advice.

I spent the whole day salivating over reviews of the Canon Powershot S2 IS. I think I read about 8 reviews of it around, the best being this one at DCRP. I think I’ve hit the sweet spot, with Image stablization, long range Zoom, excellent battery life, a pro-esque boastable look, Sound Recording, decent Video, and some more freaky features. I’m salivating over it:D

But, there’s a problem: I set the limit to yesterday’s fundraiser at $250, ‘coz that was the price listed at CNET. My (extremely limited) past experiences have shown me that the price at the local store is actually lower than the price listed, so I set the target at $250.

But, today, checking prices on eBay.in, the most accurate reflection of Indian Prices, showed around 20k Rupees, which translates to roughly $450. And, checking the prices at the local shop gave me something around 19k, which is still around the same mark:( Hopefully, this is a mistake I won’t make again…

But, why Shop locally, when there’s Amazon? It’s because Amazon doesn’t ship to India. Not just Amazon, but every freakin online shop out there doesn’t ship to India. Yikes! Just ignore an emerging market with more people getting online everyday. What an awesome business strategy:D

So, I started another ChipIn, this time to raise $400. I plan to use this money to:

  • Buy my Canon PowerShot S2 IS
  • Buy a voice recorder for my upcoming podcasts
  • Payback my cousin Sudar, who paid for the YuviSense.net Domain and the Hosting. Thanks!
  • The Rest, I’ll buy things to give to the Village Kids at the NSS camp I’m going to. It’s a pretty underdeveloped village: I think they have a total of 20 Cellphones, in a village of 500 Families.

All Donors get a mention, and top 5 get an analysis(if they want, that is) of their blog. Please contribute, even if it’s just a $5, ‘coz it adds up. You can contribute with the Widget Below, in the Sidebar, or here. Thanks!

StatBot: Analysis of Scoble’s LinkBlog’s Contents

January 6, 2007 | 5:28 pm

I didn’t intend to write a Part 2 of LinkBlog analysis, but since Scoble said that it would be more diverse if I counted links in the posts in the LinkBlog, I guess I’ll just have to see if that is true…

Self-Marketing

But before I start on that, I need to make a request. I am participating in an NSS camp organized by our school from 12th January to 22nd January, during which we go to a remote village, spread AIDS awareness, Education, and so on. And, about 25 of us will get a chance to experience Rural India. Think about it: No PC, no Electricity, no TV! Bliss?:D

I’ll blog about it when I return, but before that, I need a camera to capture the process. So, I really need a camera now. But, inorder for me to get my own camera, I’ll have to get the money. I’m using ChipIn.com, at the advice of David. I’ll update my sidebar with the ChipIn widget tomorrow, till then, you can head over here and donate:D I’d appreciate even a dollar or two, since they eventually add up…

I will list all donations in a page, and do an analysis of the Top 5 contributors, if they wish:D Thanks!

Update: The Widget is now up in the sidebar. I’ll post more details of the camp tomorrow. Happy reading!
Now, back to our regularly scheduled program…

General Statistics

I used the same dataset as the one for the previous analysis, with the same 82 days of posts. In those 82 days, the posts contained a total of 13,813 links, at an average of 168 links a day and 3 links a post. The mammoth 168 links a day is attributed to the equally mammoth 50 posts a day posting frequency.

Top Ten

Here are the most linked to hosts in the content of the LinkBlog posts:

Rank Host Links Posts Link % Post %
1 feeds.feedburner.com 2147 1359 15.54 33.67
2 www.podtech.net 325 281 2.35 6.96
3 www.technorati.com 272 268 1.97 6.64
4 www.flickr.com 199 122 1.44 3.02
5 www.techcrunch.com 189 146 1.37 3.62
6 mashable.com 164 68 1.19 1.68
7 feeds.gawker.com 156 156 1.13 3.87
8 en.wikipedia.org 139 107 1.01 2.65
9 www.engadget.com 130 85 0.94 2.11
10 www.google.com 125 85 0.91 2.11

Links is the number of links to the host, Posts is the number of posts containing atleast a link to the host, Link% is the percentage of total links to the Host, while Post% is the percentage of posts containing atleast a link to the Host.

Here’s the chart of his top ten hosts:

FeedBurner?

FeedBurner comes first? How? It’s because FeedBurner allows you to put text-badges with links to Digg the post, del.icio.us it, Email it, Reddit and lots of other similar badges. And no, they don’t point directly to the websites themselves: They are redirected through feedburner. Also, FeedBurner feed ads also point to a feeds.feedburner.com URL, and I am currently unable to determine which are Ads and which are badges: The URLs look indistinguishable. No structural difference. My guess is that

PodTech

PodTech is at #2, and if you discount feedburner, it’s at #1. Here’s the breakup of what he links to within PodTech

The majority go to Search, with 185 links to http://www.PodTech.net/home/search a surprise for me. Looks like they are using them as a substitute for tags. Yeah, I know it works very similarly, but don’t you think tags and searches are fundamentally different beasts? Another call for PodTech to update/refactor it’s permalinks.

Technorati

Heard of Technorati tags? They are the major contributors of links, with a miniscule amount of searches as well. Google is the most mentioned Tag, with 15 occurences. The rest are single digit, and none even make it past 5! Blogging has 5, Digg and Payperpost have 4 and Yahoo and Microsoft have 3 links.

And, BTW, only 6.67% of posts use Technorati tags, which is pretty surprising for me.

Flickr

Most of the links to Flickr come from images used by the bloggers, with only 30 links are to non-images, with 9 to the Flickr home page, and 8 just to Thomas Hawk’s page. Here’s the obligatory graph:

Pretty distributed, but as you can see, Thomas Hawk tops the list, with Nial Kennedy coming a distant second.

feeds.gawker.com

Gawker is the company that publishes, among other things, the ever popular Lifehacker, the new web 2.0 paparazzi Valleywag, and the distant Engadget competitor Gizmodo. They run the hosted version of feedburner, so that means they get both the rich features of feedburner as well as their own URL. Sweet. Here’s the chart:

Looks like Lifehacker ate the other two:D

Ads

However, further investigation reveals that *all* those links are Ads. Yes, all those 189 links are ads. Geez! And, who knows how many of the 2147 feedburner links are Ads? I don’t know, since the URL isn’t different! Man, aren’t they raking in lots of PageRank:D

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is unsurprising. No link hoarding. Only two links to Robert Scoble :D And, no other article has gotten more than two links.

Google

Google too turns up in the top ten. Here’s the breakup:

Searches turned up much more than I expected, with 26 searches. Also, I expected Google reader to give in more than 5 links. And, incase you are interested, of those 5 links, 3 are to the reader itself, while one is to Scoble’s LinkBlog, while the other is to Tom Rafter’s LinkBlog. Isn’t it ironic that his LinkBlog should contain only one link to itself(His Blog contained 39 references to it.)?:D

The Long Tail

I actually removed feedburner from this comparison, since it took up a whole 15% of the chart, while it shouldn’t be there! And, yes, I removed Gawker Feeds as well(Links to Lifehacker weren’t affected by this. Infact, Once FeedBurner and Gawker are taken out, Microsoft shoots up to 9th place and Lifehacker moves to 10th place. Yay!).

This has the smallest percentage being taken up by the top ten, down to 15% from 27% for the main blog. Maybe, afterall, Scoble’s LinkBlog’s content’s Links are more distributed?

Distribution of Links

The raison d’etre of this blog post. Here’s the comparative Chart of unique number of hosts:

The LinkBlog’s Links are spread out across a whooping 3764 domains, while the Blog’s Links are spread out across a smaller 1858 domains.

Yes, the contents of the Scoble’s LinkBlog’s Links are more diverse than his Blog! Afterall, they are written by 483+ authors, rather than just one egoistical bastard who used the word I twice as much as the word you :D

Top 40

In the spirit of the last post, I guess I should publish the Top 40 sites that are linked to the most from the LinkBlog:

StatBot: Analysing Scoble’s Link Blog

January 5, 2007 | 5:06 pm

I was actually going to write Part II of Analysing Scobleizer.com, with word usage analysis,  but Scoble posted saying that an analysis of his Link blog would be more interesting. So I just copied the PaleRash folder, renamed it to RedRash, hacked at it for half an hour, implemented two more IReportables, and presto! Here’s the analysis of Scoble’s link blog!

Starting Time

The first link in his Link Blog was to Dave Winer on 1 July 03! That’s 4 years back! But the next two links were in 2004, and the next two were in 2005. So, my inference here is that he just tried them to see how they worked, and actually started using them actively only later. And, all those 5 links were to Dave Winer :)

The link blog really took off only from 10 October 06: He posted 24 Links just on that day! So, I’ll just consider October 10 as the start date of the link blog. That gives us 82 days of posting.

Posting Frequency

He made a total of 4036 posts, in just 82 days! That gives us an average of 49.2 posts a day! That is quite a bit, but then you can’t really use the word “post” here. A Post in his main blog means he comes across something postworthy, links to it and tells us what he thinks of it, whereas a link here just means that he found a link interesting enough to be posted. So, his LinkBlog is more like a delicious account than a true blog. So, comparing Posting Frequencies of his LinkBlog to posting frequency of his Blog is like comparing Scoble to Shakespeare: It’s just not fair!

Linking Frequency

The real thing that you can compare between the two blogs is Linking Frequency. Afterall, instead of writing a post about an interesting link, he just posts it verbatim to his LinkBlog. So, here is the Graph:

The links seem to be going steady enough for me. Let’s just have a close up look:

Note that his LinkBlog hasn’t caught up with the number of Links in the Blog, but that is only because the Blog has been

The frequency of links at his blog is 11 links a day, while it is about 49 a day for the LinkBlog! But that makes sense, since he’s able to post things that won’t make the cut to his main blog. An example of this is my post about getting the JSON feed of Google Search Results in C#. Yeah, that wouldn’t have made the cut in his blog, but it got a link from his Link Blog(Thanks Scoble!).

Top Ten Feeds

The most interesting part of the analysis:)

Here’s the Top Ten, with their Rank in the main Blog as well.

Link Blog Rank Host No. of Links No. of Links in Blog Blog Rank
1 www.podtech.net 258 121 3
2 blogs.msdn.com 202 82 6
3 www.techcrunch.com 163 50 11
4 www.digg.com  147 25 20
5 www.lifehacker.com 122 11 59
6 blogs.zdnet.com 86 60 8
7 www.gigaom.com  79 20 25
8 www.readwriteweb.com 72 9 70
9 www.engadget.com 72 25 21
10 www.mashable.com  69 2 567

Observe that all the sites(except PodTech) here are primarily News site.I’d even call Digg a news site: afterall, it brings you something new.

Here’s the chart showing the top ten in the LinkBlog:

PodTech, MSDN Blogs and TechCrunch take almost half the links to themselves. You could replace TechCrunch with Digg or Lifehacker, and you’ll still get almost the same result.

The distribution closely resembles that of the main blog, but ofcourse with different sites. And, here’s our comparative chart:

As you can see, all the sites have more links in the LinkBlog than in the Blog, which might seem obvious since he posts more frequently in his LinkBlog. But no, that is wrong. Why? I’ll come back to it later.

PodTech

As he says here, he’s linking more to PodTech, obviously because he’s working there. Same applies here.

As you see, PodTech Home dominates. But, what exactly is PodTech Home? A very general category indeed. But, my guess is that for his own shows, he links from the ScobleShow feed, while for other’s shows, he links to the generic category.

That gives me a request/suggestion: The PodTech permalink structure needs to be more distinct and unique. For example, have a look at this URL: http://www.podtech.net/home/technology/1757/photoalbums-and-more-with-doug-rowan-and-scott-beale. And this one: http://www.podtech.net/scobleshow/technology/1292/photoalbums-and-more-with-doug-rowan-and-scott-beale. To the Human Eye, they are both the same. But, from the Search Engine and Scrapper point of view, they are both different. They share nothing more common than the host name.

I’ll just repeat it again, just to stress the point: The PodTech permalink structure needs to be refactored.

MSDN Blogs

MSDN Blogs lands at #2. But, there’s one huge difference in what he subscribes to and what he links to. Here’s a link-to graph:

So, this means he subscribes to only 5 feeds from MSDN Blogs. And four of them are probably just for namesake, since they are going to turn up in the main feed anyway. Items from the MSDN All Blogs feed has been posted 192 times, which is the highest for a single feed!

Let’s look through the veil and have a look at who he actually links to:

Frank Arrigo tops the list with 11 links, while Coding4Fun comes a second with 8 links.Jason Langridgee, Raymond Chen and Stan Lippman all get 5 links each. But ofcourse, the majority of the links come from distributed bloggers: There’s no one blogger hoarding them all. This means, he’s more interested in the news than the bloggers themselves.

TechCrunch

TechCrunch is the third most posted to feed, but you won’t find even a single permalink that points directly to TechCrunch.com. Why? They use feedburner. This means that a straightforward permalink will be converted to a link to feeds.feedburner.com in the RSS reader, which redirects to the proper url. That won’t mean much, until the day feedburner goes down and I get my I-told-you-so moment:D Hopefully, that won’t happen in my lifetime, but…;)

ZDNet Blogs

ZDNet Blogs figure prominently here as well, being one of the three hosts that made it to the top ten of both his Blog an LinkBlog. Here’s the ZDNet bloggers he links to:

BTL is top here again. Infact, it’s actually the 11th most posted from site, with 63 links. Permalinks? 0. FeedBurner at work:)

The Rest of the Top Ten

The rest of the top ten had no surprises in store, being mostly news sites that didn’t use feedburner. No surprises.

FeedBurner

FeedBurner has 28% of all the links! They don’t even have content of their own! It’s just meta content, and bandwidth savings. Have a look at that chart.

29% might not look like much, untill you count that in Scoble’s 483 feeds, about 140 come through feedburner. That saves bloggers quite a bit of bandwidth, but it also means a lot of feeds pass through a single point. So, by the time I join Microsoft, someone please remind me to use The Evil Borg’s(tm) Evil BloodSucking Money(tm), buy FeedBurner and put in adverts all over the place, along with an EULA that says we own your Dog if you read this. If it had not been bought by someone else by that time, that is….

And, here’s the the chart of blogs which are using FeedBurner:

Looks like lots of small providers as well as the big guns use FeedBurner. Afterall, they get to save a lot of bandwidth, for no visible cost! And, with no competitor in sight, feedburner seems to be going on really well.

The Long tail

That is exactly the same percentages as the main blog. Microsoft Conspiracy?

Distribution

Scoble thought that the Link Blog would be more Representative, more distributed. Yep, it looks like it is. Here’s the graph:

No blue pacman:)

This time, only 25% of all sites have only one link, compared to 70% in the main blog! So, your chance of being dumped after getting a single link is much slimmer with his LinkBlog :D

And, more than 45% of the sites have more than 5 links! Also, 29% have more than 10 links! Looks like it’s easier to get a link here, right?

Entry Fee

But wait! Before you go celebrate about getting into Scoble’s LinkBlog, there is a serious caveat: You first have to get into his subscribed list! That is pretty hard. Here’s a Chart:

See the difference? Yes, there are more items in the LinkBlog. But, they are from narrow sources. The LinkBlog’s posts are spread out across 351 hosts, while the main blog’s links are spread out across 1858 hosts! The links in his Blog are much more diverse than the ones in his LinkBlog. Afterall, he has many more sources than just his Feeds, right?

Bottom-Line: Scoble was wrong. It’s not less biased. It is more biased. He might be putting anything that catches his eye, but catching his eye in his Feeds means you first have to get into his Feeds.

The Alltime Top 40

Since Scoble published his Top 40 most PostedFrom Feeds here, I guess I can compete with Google in a very small way by giving the AllTime Top 40 most linked From Feeds. Note that these are individual feeds.

Next

I am currently suspending development work on cleaning up my code for release. I’ll do that in my holidays. Work is already underway for my next StatBot post, and this time, It is one of the Biggest Websites in circulation on The Tubes. Any guesses?:D

And word analysis: I am learning some NLP concepts, and the Word Analysis will have to wait till I am finished. I will just post the top-x words sometime soon.

Notes

  • Thanks for all the emails and comments, and blog posts. Thanks!
  • It’s now 8:51 AM in the US. Now let’s see how long it takes before Scoble gets across this(might be quicker that I am in his Subscribed List, but still..)
  • Found the Blog of a 12 year old, David Willkinson, who’s blogging about Tech and making money off it! I too would be, but for the fact that Google rejected my blog thrice, and I couldn’t find any alternative that pays in India:(. And, I wish I were as cool as he is when I was 12: All I knew at that time was VB6 and TurboC, and the Internet existed only in the Computer Science Text Books.
  • I will be posting a miscellinia post here soon, covering specific requests on Scoble’s blog and some more. Any requests, just leave a comment:)
  • Special mention to Guy Pelletier, for constant encouragement. Thanks!

Featured on theDailyWTF and Scoble’s LinkBlog teasers.

January 2, 2007 | 6:04 pm

This is turning out to be one great week for me! First got scobleized twice, then got a lot of friends, and today, one of my contributions was featured on theDailyWTF! Scroll down, and the Fifth Popup is mine. I actually posted about it here, and here it is!

I was supposed to actually post the Link Analysis of Scoble’s Link Blog yesterday, but an untimely intermittent fever and cold are limiting my uptime:( But, the analysis is about 90% finished, and I’ll post it tomorrow(hopefully).

And, here’re some teasers!

  • You have a higher chance of getting 10+ links from his main blog than getting 2+ links in his blog!
  • But, this comes with a serious caveat.
  • He made the first post there in 2003, and to Dave Winer:D
  • MSDN Blogs is the most posted-from single feed.
  • But, he subscribes to only 5 MSDN Blogs

I’ve got an architecture figured out to support multiple blog platforms, and though it’s not the best, it’s the one that’ll work the most. Stay tuned.

And tomorrow marks the start of School, and I have taken another new year resolution to try my best to act as if my Chemistry Teacher just didn’t exist. Now, if I could show that Google Analytics page to my Principal and get him to be lighter on me or get someone to send a letter to my school….

Thanks for the comments guys! And thanks to all the people who linked to me! I guess analysing my blog would show a drastic increas in the usage of the word Thanks in the last 2 days… ;)

Sploggers in the New Year

January 1, 2007 | 1:59 pm

Happy new year everyone!

Last week has been the week of the year for me: Got scobleized twice! But more importantly, gained a lot of new friends. Thanks guys!

Now, a lot of people had asked me to package up the application and put it online. I have no qualms about that. But, there’s a problem: Sploggers.

First, let me explain the app a litlle bit. It’s actually split into 2 standalone apps, one which scraps the blog and produces an SQLite database. The next part takes the SQLite database as input, and produced all the data for those pretty reports(I used Excel 07 for the Charts). The advantage here is, I’ll just have to change one app to scrap a different blog. BTW, I’ve already modified my code to work with Scoble’s link blog :D Expect an analysis of his link blog soon;)

So, what’s the problem if I publish the app? Sploggers. You could replace the second app with another app which posts all the posts to a blog! It’ll be just about an hour of work, and viola! You have a brand new splog! But, this is more efficient than just scrapping off their RSS feeds, since you get to splog all the posts, right from the beginning! Yeah, any spammer worth his salt can write a scrapper in a few hours, but I don’t wanna provide anyone with a readymade solution.

And, it just won’t scale. It worked fine when I could fix bugs by breaking into the code. But, it just won’t work for a general out-in-the-wild solution. I’m working on some workable solutions, and I promise to make them available as soon as I can. In the meantime, you want any specific blogs to be analysed? Just drop me a mail :D

And I’m looking at some more blogs to analyse, so if you have any suggestions, drop me a comment:D

And new year resolution? Do atleast one Statbot a week:D

P.S. Thanks Christian Long! As I am currently unemployed(School sucks! Too boring), I’m open for anything:D

P.P.S I’m thinking of moving to TechCrunch, Engadget, LifeHacker, or one of those other “professional” blogs out there. What do you think?

P.P.P.S: Scoble’s Link blog analysis coming tomorrow(hopefully)

P.P.P.P.S: If you want to help me, leave a comment, drop an encouraging mail, link to me, or send me a camera :D
