Sploggers in the New Year
January 1, 2007 | 1:59 pmHappy new year everyone!
Last week has been the week of the year for me: Got scobleized twice! But more importantly, gained a lot of new friends. Thanks guys!
Now, a lot of people had asked me to package up the application and put it online. I have no qualms about that. But, there’s a problem: Sploggers.
First, let me explain the app a litlle bit. It’s actually split into 2 standalone apps, one which scraps the blog and produces an SQLite database. The next part takes the SQLite database as input, and produced all the data for those pretty reports(I used Excel 07 for the Charts). The advantage here is, I’ll just have to change one app to scrap a different blog. BTW, I’ve already modified my code to work with Scoble’s link blog
Expect an analysis of his link blog soon;)
So, what’s the problem if I publish the app? Sploggers. You could replace the second app with another app which posts all the posts to a blog! It’ll be just about an hour of work, and viola! You have a brand new splog! But, this is more efficient than just scrapping off their RSS feeds, since you get to splog all the posts, right from the beginning! Yeah, any spammer worth his salt can write a scrapper in a few hours, but I don’t wanna provide anyone with a readymade solution.
And, it just won’t scale. It worked fine when I could fix bugs by breaking into the code. But, it just won’t work for a general out-in-the-wild solution. I’m working on some workable solutions, and I promise to make them available as soon as I can. In the meantime, you want any specific blogs to be analysed? Just drop me a mail
And I’m looking at some more blogs to analyse, so if you have any suggestions, drop me a comment:D
And new year resolution? Do atleast one Statbot a week:D
P.S. Thanks Christian Long! As I am currently unemployed(School sucks! Too boring), I’m open for anything:D
P.P.S I’m thinking of moving to TechCrunch, Engadget, LifeHacker, or one of those other “professional” blogs out there. What do you think?
P.P.P.S: Scoble’s Link blog analysis coming tomorrow(hopefully)
P.P.P.P.S: If you want to help me, leave a comment, drop an encouraging mail, link to me, or send me a camera

Instead why not turn the whole thing into a website
Steve P | January 1, 2007 | 4:46 pmInstead why not turn the whole thing into a website that you can host? Maybe get some Google ad revenue that way
Thats great, I would really be interested in Lifehackers. Guy

Wow, I'm really impressed with what you've come up with!
Steve Ladan | January 2, 2007 | 10:02 amWow, I’m really impressed with what you’ve come up with! I’m a geek wannabe too, but sadly, I don’t have programming skillz like you.
Keep the good work coming.;-)
Thank You! And, thanks Robert for comin over here! Sure
yuvipanda | January 2, 2007 | 5:43 pmThank You! And, thanks Robert for comin over here! Sure hope to meet you one day, and the day I do that, I’ll borrow your podcasting equipment to interview you:D
@Dhawal: Slashdot was on my radar until I found that it’s robots.txt file explicitly disallows crawling:( Can’t help:( Wired, I’ll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion…
@Micheal.NET: Thanks!:) Babies are cuter than cameras anyway, and the former would make you more happier:)
Yuvi -- Yes, I received your email and blog comment;
Christian | January 2, 2007 | 9:04 pmYuvi — Yes, I received your email and blog comment; good to ‘meet’ you in both ways.
‘m definitely looking forward to getting to know you better in the year ahead, hearing more about what you’re hoping to pull off as a learner (aka ’student’) while in school and as an entrepreneur (aka ‘professional’) now and in the coming years.
If you have a Skype account, look me up: christianadamslong and let’s find time to begin brainstorming together, and for me to simply hear more about what is pulling you ‘forward’ as a ‘wanna-be geek’, learner, and rising professional. If not, we can continue the evolving conversation via email. Once I get a better sense of your goals/instincts, I’ll share a few ideas I have that may be of value to you…but it has to be customized to what you’re seeking, not the other way around.
In the meantime, enjoy the rush of attention, the great network you’re quickly developing, the development of your current beta analysis tool, and the great unknown that lies ahead. Soon you’ll want to create your “goals” list so that you can make good decisions with all that may come your way; make sure it fits what you want to accomplish, no matter how tempting the opportunity may be (what you may see with me, as well). Oh, and congrats on being Scobled 2x in one week. That’s gotta put you up there with Google’s team, Ze Frank, Amanda, Dave Winer, and a few select others, he smiles. Nicely done!
Happy New Year…and look forward to learning more from you in the days/weeks/months ahead.
Cheers,
Christian
Yuvi, here is a quick blogroll of 7 popular blogs
Krishna Kumar | January 2, 2007 | 9:53 pmYuvi, here is a quick blogroll of 7 popular blogs that you may want to analyze. It would be nice if you could analyze my site (http://krishami.blogspot.com), but I don’t have enough data (50+ posts) that will be worth your time or to post online. The ones below should have a lot of raw data for analysis purposes that will help you streamline your application (for performance and features).

Antibush | February 13, 2007 | 3:57 pmBush is forever saying that democracies do not invade other countries and start wars. Well, he did just that. He invaded Iraq, started a war, and killed people. What do you think? How does that work in a democracy again? How does being more threatening make us more likeable?Isn’t the country with
the most weapons the biggest threat to the rest of the world? When one country is the biggest threat to the rest of the world, isn’t that likely to be the most hated country?
Our country is in debt until forever, we don’t have jobs, and we live in fear. We have invaded a country and been responsible for thousands of deaths.
We have lost friends and influenced no one. No wonder most of the world thinks we suck. Thanks to what george bush has done to our country during the past three years, we do!
