StatBot: Analysing Scoble’s Link Blog
January 5, 2007 | 5:06 pmI was actually going to write Part II of Analysing Scobleizer.com, with word usage analysis, but Scoble posted saying that an analysis of his Link blog would be more interesting. So I just copied the PaleRash folder, renamed it to RedRash, hacked at it for half an hour, implemented two more IReportables, and presto! Here’s the analysis of Scoble’s link blog!
Starting Time
The first link in his Link Blog was to Dave Winer on 1 July 03! That’s 4 years back! But the next two links were in 2004, and the next two were in 2005. So, my inference here is that he just tried them to see how they worked, and actually started using them actively only later. And, all those 5 links were to Dave Winer
The link blog really took off only from 10 October 06: He posted 24 Links just on that day! So, I’ll just consider October 10 as the start date of the link blog. That gives us 82 days of posting.
Posting Frequency
He made a total of 4036 posts, in just 82 days! That gives us an average of 49.2 posts a day! That is quite a bit, but then you can’t really use the word “post” here. A Post in his main blog means he comes across something postworthy, links to it and tells us what he thinks of it, whereas a link here just means that he found a link interesting enough to be posted. So, his LinkBlog is more like a delicious account than a true blog. So, comparing Posting Frequencies of his LinkBlog to posting frequency of his Blog is like comparing Scoble to Shakespeare: It’s just not fair!
Linking Frequency
The real thing that you can compare between the two blogs is Linking Frequency. Afterall, instead of writing a post about an interesting link, he just posts it verbatim to his LinkBlog. So, here is the Graph:
The links seem to be going steady enough for me. Let’s just have a close up look:
Note that his LinkBlog hasn’t caught up with the number of Links in the Blog, but that is only because the Blog has been
The frequency of links at his blog is 11 links a day, while it is about 49 a day for the LinkBlog! But that makes sense, since he’s able to post things that won’t make the cut to his main blog. An example of this is my post about getting the JSON feed of Google Search Results in C#. Yeah, that wouldn’t have made the cut in his blog, but it got a link from his Link Blog(Thanks Scoble!).
Top Ten Feeds
The most interesting part of the analysis:)
Here’s the Top Ten, with their Rank in the main Blog as well.
| Link Blog Rank | Host | No. of Links | No. of Links in Blog | Blog Rank |
| 1 | www.podtech.net | 258 | 121 | 3 |
| 2 | blogs.msdn.com | 202 | 82 | 6 |
| 3 | www.techcrunch.com | 163 | 50 | 11 |
| 4 | www.digg.com | 147 | 25 | 20 |
| 5 | www.lifehacker.com | 122 | 11 | 59 |
| 6 | blogs.zdnet.com | 86 | 60 | 8 |
| 7 | www.gigaom.com | 79 | 20 | 25 |
| 8 | www.readwriteweb.com | 72 | 9 | 70 |
| 9 | www.engadget.com | 72 | 25 | 21 |
| 10 | www.mashable.com | 69 | 2 | 567 |
Observe that all the sites(except PodTech) here are primarily News site.I’d even call Digg a news site: afterall, it brings you something new.
Here’s the chart showing the top ten in the LinkBlog:
PodTech, MSDN Blogs and TechCrunch take almost half the links to themselves. You could replace TechCrunch with Digg or Lifehacker, and you’ll still get almost the same result.
The distribution closely resembles that of the main blog, but ofcourse with different sites. And, here’s our comparative chart:
As you can see, all the sites have more links in the LinkBlog than in the Blog, which might seem obvious since he posts more frequently in his LinkBlog. But no, that is wrong. Why? I’ll come back to it later.
PodTech
As he says here, he’s linking more to PodTech, obviously because he’s working there. Same applies here.
As you see, PodTech Home dominates. But, what exactly is PodTech Home? A very general category indeed. But, my guess is that for his own shows, he links from the ScobleShow feed, while for other’s shows, he links to the generic category.
That gives me a request/suggestion: The PodTech permalink structure needs to be more distinct and unique. For example, have a look at this URL: http://www.podtech.net/home/technology/1757/photoalbums-and-more-with-doug-rowan-and-scott-beale. And this one: http://www.podtech.net/scobleshow/technology/1292/photoalbums-and-more-with-doug-rowan-and-scott-beale. To the Human Eye, they are both the same. But, from the Search Engine and Scrapper point of view, they are both different. They share nothing more common than the host name.
I’ll just repeat it again, just to stress the point: The PodTech permalink structure needs to be refactored.
MSDN Blogs
MSDN Blogs lands at #2. But, there’s one huge difference in what he subscribes to and what he links to. Here’s a link-to graph:
So, this means he subscribes to only 5 feeds from MSDN Blogs. And four of them are probably just for namesake, since they are going to turn up in the main feed anyway. Items from the MSDN All Blogs feed has been posted 192 times, which is the highest for a single feed!
Let’s look through the veil and have a look at who he actually links to:
Frank Arrigo tops the list with 11 links, while Coding4Fun comes a second with 8 links.Jason Langridgee, Raymond Chen and Stan Lippman all get 5 links each. But ofcourse, the majority of the links come from distributed bloggers: There’s no one blogger hoarding them all. This means, he’s more interested in the news than the bloggers themselves.
TechCrunch
TechCrunch is the third most posted to feed, but you won’t find even a single permalink that points directly to TechCrunch.com. Why? They use feedburner. This means that a straightforward permalink will be converted to a link to feeds.feedburner.com in the RSS reader, which redirects to the proper url. That won’t mean much, until the day feedburner goes down and I get my I-told-you-so moment:D Hopefully, that won’t happen in my lifetime, but…;)
ZDNet Blogs
ZDNet Blogs figure prominently here as well, being one of the three hosts that made it to the top ten of both his Blog an LinkBlog. Here’s the ZDNet bloggers he links to:
BTL is top here again. Infact, it’s actually the 11th most posted from site, with 63 links. Permalinks? 0. FeedBurner at work:)
The Rest of the Top Ten
The rest of the top ten had no surprises in store, being mostly news sites that didn’t use feedburner. No surprises.
FeedBurner
FeedBurner has 28% of all the links! They don’t even have content of their own! It’s just meta content, and bandwidth savings. Have a look at that chart.
29% might not look like much, untill you count that in Scoble’s 483 feeds, about 140 come through feedburner. That saves bloggers quite a bit of bandwidth, but it also means a lot of feeds pass through a single point. So, by the time I join Microsoft, someone please remind me to use The Evil Borg’s(tm) Evil BloodSucking Money(tm), buy FeedBurner and put in adverts all over the place, along with an EULA that says we own your Dog if you read this. If it had not been bought by someone else by that time, that is….
And, here’s the the chart of blogs which are using FeedBurner:
Looks like lots of small providers as well as the big guns use FeedBurner. Afterall, they get to save a lot of bandwidth, for no visible cost! And, with no competitor in sight, feedburner seems to be going on really well.
The Long tail
That is exactly the same percentages as the main blog. Microsoft Conspiracy?
Distribution
Scoble thought that the Link Blog would be more Representative, more distributed. Yep, it looks like it is. Here’s the graph:
No blue pacman:)
This time, only 25% of all sites have only one link, compared to 70% in the main blog! So, your chance of being dumped after getting a single link is much slimmer with his LinkBlog
And, more than 45% of the sites have more than 5 links! Also, 29% have more than 10 links! Looks like it’s easier to get a link here, right?
Entry Fee
But wait! Before you go celebrate about getting into Scoble’s LinkBlog, there is a serious caveat: You first have to get into his subscribed list! That is pretty hard. Here’s a Chart:
See the difference? Yes, there are more items in the LinkBlog. But, they are from narrow sources. The LinkBlog’s posts are spread out across 351 hosts, while the main blog’s links are spread out across 1858 hosts! The links in his Blog are much more diverse than the ones in his LinkBlog. Afterall, he has many more sources than just his Feeds, right?
Bottom-Line: Scoble was wrong. It’s not less biased. It is more biased. He might be putting anything that catches his eye, but catching his eye in his Feeds means you first have to get into his Feeds.
The Alltime Top 40
Since Scoble published his Top 40 most PostedFrom Feeds here, I guess I can compete with Google in a very small way by giving the AllTime Top 40 most linked From Feeds. Note that these are individual feeds.
Anything else you need to know specifically? Let me know!
Next
I am currently suspending development work on cleaning up my code for release. I’ll do that in my holidays. Work is already underway for my next StatBot post, and this time, It is one of the Biggest Websites in circulation on The Tubes. Any guesses?:D
And word analysis: I am learning some NLP concepts, and the Word Analysis will have to wait till I am finished. I will just post the top-x words sometime soon.
Notes
- Thanks for all the emails and comments, and blog posts. Thanks!
- It’s now 8:51 AM in the US. Now let’s see how long it takes before Scoble gets across this(might be quicker that I am in his Subscribed List, but still..)
- Found the Blog of a 12 year old, David Willkinson, who’s blogging about Tech and making money off it! I too would be, but for the fact that Google rejected my blog thrice, and I couldn’t find any alternative that pays in India:(. And, I wish I were as cool as he is when I was 12: All I knew at that time was VB6 and TurboC, and the Internet existed only in the Computer Science Text Books.
- I will be posting a miscellinia post here soon, covering specific requests on Scoble’s blog and some more. Any requests, just leave a comment:)
- Special mention to Guy Pelletier, for constant encouragement. Thanks!

Thanks fore the link, This post again shows your potential.
I would ask for the following from Scoble’s blog, if possible:
1. A statbot reading of his comments across all his blogs
a. What is the average count of comments per post
b. How many times does Robert reply to comments
c. how many unique people have commented to Robert’s posts
2. Is ther a common theme between what he writes about and what he link blogs to
Again, this is absolutly the best analysis I have seen!

Beth Sanders | July 18, 2007 | 4:02 pm1WI2Or First of all, there’s no one else like YOU—your story is unique and you can tell about people, times, and places that only YOU can share.
Why not tell your grandchildren about you….plus their grandparents, great-grandparents, and even their great-great grandparents (that’s
your grandparents)! It’s really about creating a loving, lasting bond—preserving not just life stories, but relationships, for
generations to come.
Of course, you can also give them your own advice about love, work, and how to lead a good life. Here was my grandma’s advice to me: “Be
what you want. If you do something, do it the best you can.” Because it’s my grandma, it means so much more. I’ll always be able to
remember what she said because it was actually written down. What’s your advice for your family? This is your opportunity to write it
down.
Reminiscing is good for you too! Over 100 studies over the last 10 years have found that reminiscing lowers depression, alleviates
physical symptoms (arthritis, asthma), and stimulates the hippocampus where memories are stored in the brain. So consider the great
health reasons for reminiscing too.
LuK3x0 First there is the need to find the real
Maria Sanches | July 18, 2007 | 11:02 pmLuK3×0 First there is the need to find the real meaning life has for you. This journey we are all on is a varied one, for sure, but there are some similar things we are all going through.
Each of us, in our search for meaning in life, has a vast amount of experience to draw upon. Our struggles and hardship, along with our achievements and blessings, teach us life’s lessons. Your experience, your strength and the hope that endures are part of your unique story — and part of the reason why you should tell your life story.
The second primary reason to tell your life story is to leave your mark. We all want to be remembered. Certainly we want to be remembered for the good we’ve done and for the significant accomplishments in our lives. There is satisfaction in a life well-lived. Living a life fully… richly experiencing what it means to be alive and involved in helping others is a great thing. To share with others who you are, what you are about and what you believe in is passing on some very valuable personal history.

Rosa McCauley | July 21, 2007 | 4:15 pmydsUmB Parks was born Rosa McCauley in Tuskegee, Alabama. When she was still a young child her parents separated, and she moved with her mother to Montgomery. There she grew up in an extended family that included her maternal grandparents and her younger brother, Sylvester. Montgomery, Alabama, was hardly a hospitable city for blacks in the 1920s and 1930s. As she grew up, Rosa was shunted into second-rate all-black schools, such as the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls, and she faced daily rounds of laws governing her behavior in public places. Ms. magazine contributor Eloise Greenfield noted that Rosa always detested having to drink from special water fountains and having to forgo lunch at the whites-only restaurants downtown. Still, wrote Greenfield, “with her mother’s help, Rosa was able to grow up proud of herself and other black people, even while living with these rules…. People should be judged by the respect they have for themselves and others, Mrs. McCauley said. Rosa grew up believing this.”

penis enlargement | July 29, 2007 | 2:17 pmIf you’re a blogger (or a blog reader), you’re painfully familiar with people who try to raise their own websites’ search engine rankings by submitting linked blog comments like “Visit my discount pharmaceuticals site.” This is called comment spam, we don’t like it either, and we’ve been testing a new tag that blocks it. From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted; it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists. http://www.gordoniihoodia.net
