StatBot: Analysing Matt Cutts

March 2, 2007 | 3:15 pm

Matt “GoogleGuy” Cutts is a Cool guy, because, uh, he’s cool. He works at Big G. He’s the first result for “SEO Blog“, which speaks volumes of his, uhm, SEO Skill. And, he’s got a really cool name. No really, he does. The Double Double Ts are cool:) So, despite the fact that Google keeps rejecting my site for AdSense, I’m going to run StatBot on his blog this time while my newer WPF based kid grows good enough for Engadget vs Gizmodo. I ain’t doing the mistake I did last time, and so while I’ll be fixing bugs in the older, messier code base, I’ll also be developing the newer codebase in parallel.

If you find the previous paragraph a bit wishy washy and cloudy, it’s due to the effect of being drawn into reading pages and pages of Rory Blyth when you went there just to investigate if it would do a good StatBot post(It would, but I’d have to do more work in analysing his dash beautiful language). Browsing through his archives is, however, highly reccommended if you’re cutting school because of spikes in your EEG. However, snorting sawdust is highly not recommended.

Shameless Plug

Wanna know how life at school is over here in India? While my School’s no average school(We’re way above the line, believe me), most of the fun and real learning takes place outside the classes and after school. I’ve uploaded a boatload of images to my Zooomr Account(Which is excellent, BTW, and is getting excellenter with an update coming soon) and you can subscribe to that feed over here. Also, my PowerShot S3 can make some decent vids in broad daylight, so you can subscribe to my Revver Feed as well. Here is one video of what I call effective teaching.

General Statistics

The corpus consited of 435 posts in 591 days, which is a little more than a year and a half, during which he averages around 5 posts a week.

Posting Frequency

Our first chart for the day!

His posting frequency peaked at first half of 2006 and has settled at a slightly lower rate after that. He’s slowing down, but not at a considerable rate.

Linking Frequency

The number of links per post is slowly crawling up. SEO PR juice flowing outwards, slowly….

 Reader Engagement

One thing that’s surprised me about Matt’s Blog is the sheer number of comments he’s getting. Those 435 posts contain 25,732 comments, at an average of 59 comments per post! He actually gets more comments per post than TechCrunch(39 comments a post) and way more comments than Mashable(16 comments a post) or Scoble(20 comments a post). Even Raymond Chen gets only about half as much comments as Matt(23 comments a post). If you combine the comments of Scoble, Mashable and Raymond, then and only then do they equal the frequency of comments at Matt’s Blog. Maybe, it’s just that he’s more networked than anyone else?

Steadily increasing over the years, though seems to have settled at a constant rate after October 06. But still, what a cool networker!

[I’d have loved to get the data on individual commenters, but my bandwidth constrains don’t permit me :( The same bandwidth constraints are the ones preventing the StatBot of TechCrunch vs Mashable!, Engadget vs Gizmodo and Digg :( Hope to get an unlimited connection, and hey, if you wanna help, paypal me at yuvipanda@gmail.com or sponsor a child through worldvision.org]

Top Ten Hosts

Notice that the top ten hosts take more than 50% of the top ten to themselves! If I were to compare the links to the top ten sites and the rest,

38% of the links are to ten sites! Pretty concentrated.

Google

The number one place goes to Google, which ain’t really a surprise since he, gosh, works for ‘em! And, where are exactly to Google are these links going to?

Webmaster Guidelines and Search Queries top the list, followed from afar by Support and Spam Report.

The next nine

Nothing analyzable, maybe except that it’s got Jeremy Zawodny, who works for Yahoo, there. The other ones are pretty expected, though I didn’t think he linked that much to Amazon…

When Does he Post?

Let’s have a look at what time of the day he posts…

From this, it’s pretty clear he almost always sleeps atleast from 2:00 AM to atleast 7:00 AM, which makes me look positively  But, he does seem to keep posting till quite late at night, some posts even at 1:00 AM! However, most of his posts are at Noon and 11:00 PM. And, it looks like he ain’t no bot….

Word Usage

Here are the top 15 interesting words from Matt’s blog, where “interesting” is defined arbitarily by three anonymous judges(I, me, myself).

Rank Word Occurences
7 I 396
10 You 274
26 Google 116
40 Search 88
49 people 73
55 page 62
60 data 57
72 url 47
77 time 44
79 pages 44
86 feedback 39
90 links 38
97 http 36
99 web 35
102 bigdaddy 35

Unlike Scoble, the gap between the words “I” and “You” is not that big;) Obviously, the first non-grammar word on the list is “BigDaddy” “Google”, though I don’t have a friggin clue about what/who bigdaddy is…

Conclusions

Many of you might not have the time to read through this full thing, so a simple four point conclusion post is available here. I know it’s kinda pointless to offer you a shorter version at the end of the post, but hey, you could always link to it along with the main article…

This is interesting stuff. I think what you shd do is package this slightly differently. Like for example, call it a “What you do not know about yourself” series or “stunning facts about you” -
