If you’re reading this via an RSS reader, click through and vote on which Distro and Desktop Environment I should use. I’ll use the highest rated one, unless something terrible happens…
Am also contemplating on how to backup the 35 gigs of photos I have accumulated over a short period of 2 months. Any ideas people?
If you don’t know what a LinuxDash is, it is just a trial when you use only Open Source software on your computer for a period of time. My LinuxDash starts April 1st.
Posting might be light now, due to some personal and connectivity problems.

I've been reading ur blog for a few months now.
Shivanand | March 30, 2007 | 7:19 amI’ve been reading ur blog for a few months now. Hard to believe that you are 16 years .. but hey .. I can learn to live with that
. (Scobleizer is where I picked up ur blog)
Now, moving to linux .. I doubt if there is any easy way to support ntfs. I use ubuntu on my laptop (HP DV 2000). Since, my work involves both windows and linux, I need quick switching .. so I run ubuntu off QEMU for now. I just posted an article on the options for ubuntu setups out there. (http://shvelmur.com/wpress/2007/03/30/blogging-from-a-linux-desktop/)
Most of the requirements you had are pretty much supported by most linux distros out there. You might want to try out Monodevelop (C# on linux!!). Tell me how you like it (It’s kinda close to my heart
)If you are planning a dual boot, I would say, use either Vmware or QEMU to run linux on windows to start with , once you are comfortable with linux, then revert it.
There are still some areas (read Gaming) where windows still is the best (read supported). Also, try and use the CLI as much as possible, you will start luving it. I’m still to meet any developer, who hasn’t fallen in love with the unix command-line, once they see the power (and responsibility) it comes with.
Some IDEs for linux
Monodevelop - C# (.NET)
Eclipse - Java
for python - read this (http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.python/browse_frm/thread/d10b18e1676eb351/3fba226d9147ff41?q=python+ide+linux&rnum=4#3fba226d9147ff41)
all failing, ofcourse there is vi (which is what I end up using most of the time)
Ohh yeah, if you want CD version of ubuntu, let me know, I can send it to you via mail (snail), if you like
Have fun moving to linux

2. Well, I would love to, but you see, being a student, I’m quite financially dependant…
Then I suggest go with vmware player (free download -
Shivanand | March 30, 2007 | 10:36 amThen I suggest go with vmware player (free download - ~30MB) or QEMU (free - 7MB). That way, you won’t be repartitioning your drive … It will be a little slow, but you will be able to try with zero risk.
If I do get a chance to come to chennai, maybe I can give you a CD!
Hehe, CDs are not a problem :D I have 25
yuvipanda | March 30, 2007 | 10:53 amHehe, CDs are not a problem
