Don’t mess with Me. Especially if you’re my brother.

December 1, 2007 | 3:42 pm

I’m pretty sure he won’t read this, so I’m writing it here. I know one person who can communicate this to him (My awesome cousin Sudar) who, I’m sure, will honor my unspoken request to not tell him. However, if he is reading this (by he, I refer to my brother), then can I, Yuvi, please ask him to stop reading now and go back to a safer place?

So, let’s start from the beggining. I have a brother. He’s my younger brother ‘coz, well, he is younger than me. But, he has a problem. He keeps irritating me. Every time. This might (and probably is) my problem, but it makes me feel (slightly) better if I can think it’s his problem and not mine. Also, it reduces my inferiority complex a bit since I don’t have to add “Irritaed by brother even if brother doesn’t irritate him” to the list of things that I’m inferior in. So, I think and believe that it’s his problem that he’s irritating me and not mine. Life (is) (G|g)ood.

But, he has one habit that really really annoys me. He uses the same computer I do. I don’t have any problem with this. Atleast, that’s what I hope I’d like to think. But, in reality (which sometimes sucks), I get irritated when he plays this darn stupid game called Cricket 2005. Don’t take my word for it: Check all these reviewers who also think that this game is stupid, sucks, and therefore shouldn’t be played by brothers. Especially younger brothers. Especially if they have elder brothers who are (wannabe) geeks. Like my brother. And Me.

So, I got too irritated with him today. I don’t use the computer too much now (With the exams comin up and all), but I got so irritated that I wrote this ZOMG awesome app called BroBuster that can pretend to be Cricet 2005 and crash every time it starts. Ofcourse, it won’t just crash. It gives out an error message about a graphics card error, and then, after a random interval, crash. This has a cool side effect, as I really *do* need a newer graphics card as my last one burnt out and my monitor is now all shaky as the inbuilt graphics controller also seems to be giving out. So, he’ll start pestering my Dad to get him a newer graphics card (so that he can continue playing that damn stupid game), which will be much more effective than me pestering him. But, he will get the card after the exams, by which time I’ll be getting my own super-awesome-super-computer thanks-to-Chuck-Rob-Deanna. So, he can play all that he wants, and I don’t have to deal with him. Problem solved!

So, message to all younger brothers out there: Don’t mess with your elder brothers. Especially if they are geeks. Even if they are wannabe geeks who can’t spell beginning correctly.

P.S. I’m sure that many of you would like to use this app(Yeah, sure. It’s goanna be as popular as xoeresa). But, unfortunately, I can’t release it now, as it can’t be used for every game now. A few config changes should take care of that, but those load-from-config-file code is not working now ‘coz it’s not yet written, ‘coz, basically I’m a lazy guy. So, all-the-non-existent-persons-who-love-my-unreleased-app, you’ll have to wait.

P.P.S: If you’re my brother, and you’re reading this, please tell me. I’ve gotta grab a helmet, some earbuds, and run. Thank you.

P.P.P.S: The first thing I’m goanna do after my exams is read the bible. Cover to cover. Well, with most of the pages torn out (so cover to cover will be small, silly). Why? ‘coz I’m goanna continue writing some more stuff that is a continuation of Rory’s awesome creation story series. So, Rory, better complete the series. Atleast before April. You are threatened. By a stupid-wannabe-geek-with-a-nervous-disorder.

@Sharath: Enjoy being brother-less, mate. There are certain advantages as well though (nothing comes free, including being brother-less)

But still, you could use the app on yourself… ;)

I do have a brother, but he has his own computer, on account of being 31.

Now I also have a wife, who is completely obsessed with spider solitaire, so this could come in handy for putting her off. And thereby getting the Tablet back in my hands; but I’m not too sure that both our PCs suddenly developing a graphics glitch specifically effecting the only game she plays and I don’t would escape detection.

She’s a canny lass (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/canny) so I’m sure she’d rumble me.

Also you may have noticed that I let slip that we have two computers, so I really don’t need to detach her from the tablet… Except that I like the Tablet dammit! That’s why I bought one! (The reason she can’t play spider solitaire on the desktop is because the TV is in a different room from the desktop, and she couldn’t possibly be limited to just one form of entertainment at a time.)

Perhaps I should purchase a second monitor for the desktop, then she could play spider solitaire and watch tv on it… but she’d probably complain about the spare room being cold. (Which is where the desktop is.)

Maybe I should buy another tablet, but having a computer / person ratio > 1 is a sign of excessive gadgettiness methinks.

Dear God of Security,

There are, quite a number of ways to get your canny lass (If I may call her so) detached from her tablet. The one that immediately comes to mind is to move the desktop to the room with the TV. Or, construct Glass Walls so that you can see the TV while in the other Room.

Or, you could just write a simple service that halted the game in the middle with an error, at random times. This service would take in a config file to know which games to interrupt when. So, Spider Solitaire would crash with a DLL not found error, while some other game would crash with some other error (You need to crash a few more games to get the canny lass (If I may call her so) uncanny)

As I said, “simple service”.

Thank You, God of Security.

yuvipanda | December 3, 2007 | 5:00 pm

P.S: I’m VERY sure that most of this will not work out: My experience with the other species of the human species (Yes, I did write the other species) is comparable to Linus Trovald’s experience with the .NET CLR. Or the Windows NT Kernel. Whatever. Point being, I have no exposure, so the methods described will certainly not work.

Well aside from there possibly being an issue with a service interfering with an instance of a program (being that they run under different user accounts, and being that Vista probably would throw a fit if a service started sending messages to processes controlled by different users) that sounds like an excellent plan.

Except I’m extraordinarily lazy.

I shall instead opt for the whole “Could I have my tablet back? Because you’re not doing anything useful and I wanted to write something.” tack instead.

Which only occasionally causes arguments when she gets all huffy about me pointing out that five minutes after she agreed to give me the machine back, she’s still playing spider solitaire. For reference as to how important spider solitaire is, I’d draw your attention to this: ( http://www.sinfest.net/archive_page.php?comicID=2639 ) which is actually quite true to life. (Except for the fact that my wife is more female than the protagonist in that comic.)

Dear God of Security, I forgot about Vista. Never used it

yuvipanda | December 6, 2007 | 1:28 pm

Dear God of Security,

I forgot about Vista. Never used it (so far. System too old). That makes the service idea unusable, but we can still write a fake Spider Solitaire(with cards.dll ofcourse), make it crash at a regular point, and replace the actual spider solitaire with our fake one. But, I guess Vista’s UAC will complain. Vista seems to conspire against me on all fronts…

P.S. Why not just create an AI player so strong that she’ll lose every time and just lose interest in the thing? Or something psychological like that? I guess you can do it: Your wife may be a canny lass (if I can call her so), but you are a God! Well, a former God, perhaps, but I guess you’ll become a god soon again :)

P.P.S: What is solitaire anyway? Never figured out how to play that. Nor Freecel. Nor Hearts. And, never looked at Spider Solitaire… Am I weird?

I once recorded myself saying “twat” to a wav file then replaced the entire soundscheme on my brother’s desktop with that one word… you can imagine the results
